Founded in 2010, CSG Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) serves as CSG’s central research institute. It focuses on fundamental, forward-looking, and key generic technology research and development to support the safe and stable operation of the power grid. Over the years, it has been honored with titles such as "Key High-tech Enterprise of the National Torch Program," "High-tech Enterprise of Guangdong Province," and "Innovative Enterprise of Guangzhou City."

Since its establishment, EPRI has provided comprehensive technical support for CSG in areas including power grid planning, system operation, disaster prevention and mitigation, equipment management, metering and marketing, and cybersecurity. It has made a series of major independent innovations in core technological areas such as large-scale grid security and stability control, complex grid simulation, ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission, and flexible DC transmission, reaching internationally advanced levels. The institute has undertaken more than 40 national-level science and technology projects and over 500 major projects at the provincial, ministerial, and company system levels. It has received nearly 150 science and technology awards at the provincial level and above, including one Special Prize, one First Prize, and one Second Prize of the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award. Notably, in 2011, the domestically developed ±500 kV DC transmission technology project won the First Prize; and in 2017, the UHV ±800 kV DC transmission project and the innovation of extra-large AC/DC power grid technology and its application in National West-East Electricity Transmission Project won the Special Prize and Second Prize respectively. EPRI holds 2,115 patents and has released 9 international standards, 76 national standards, and 54 industry standards.

EPRI is recognized as a “National Enterprise Technology Center” and hosts key national-level research platforms, including the “State Key Laboratory of HVDC, Electric Power Research Institute, CSG,” the “National Energy Power Grid Technology Research and Development Centre,” and the “National Engineering Laboratory for UHV Technology (Kunming).” It has also been approved by the Standardization Administration of China to build the National Technology Standard Innovation Base of DC Transmission and Power Electronics Technology.

EPRI serves as the Chinese national representative unit for CIGRE SC B4 (International Council on Large Electric Systems—Study Committee on DC Systems and Power Electronics). It also hosts the secretariats of several national and industry technical committees, including the National Technical Committee on Demand-side Management Standardization in the Power Industry and the Technical Committee on Power Capacitor Standardization. Additionally, it supports the secretariats of four specialized committees of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering: DC Transmission and Power Electronics, Distributed Energy Supply, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, and Electricity Market.

Committed to lawful and compliant corporate governance, EPRI continuously advances its governance system and capacity modernization, striving to build a world-class energy science research institute with global competitiveness.
