Analysis of Transient Recovery Voltage Restrictive Measures when 500 kV Current Limiting Reactor Connected to 90 kA Short-Circuit Current System

Abstract

The series current limiting reactor can effectively limit the short circuit current of the 500 kV system, but it will increase the transient recovery voltage steepness when the circuit breaker breaks, which will affect the normal breaking of the circuit breaker. In this paper, based on the demonstration project of 500 kV/90 kA current limiter in Guangnan station, the electromagnetic transient simulation software EMTP is used to study the influence of the fault current limiter on the transient recovery voltage of the circuit breaker. The results show that after the reactor is connected, when the short-circuit fault occurs in the area within 20 km from Guangnan station, the transient recovery voltage of the circuit breaker will exceed the standard value; when 600 nF capacitors with with higher capacitance are connected in parallel to the current limiting reactor, the transient recovery voltage of the circuit breaker can be limited to the standard range.
